Switzerland’s take on refurbished devices

Switzerland is emerging as a frontrunner in the circular economy, according to the findings of the Recommerce Barometer 2025, conducted in collaboration with Kantar. The study highlights the nation’s strong inclination toward sustainable practices, with major industry players driving the shift. Companies such as Swisscom, Interdiscount, Digitec Galaxus AG, MediaMarkt Switzerland, and others are actively promoting circular solutions by offering buyback programs for old devices and selling refurbished electronics. This collective effort positions Switzerland as a key player in the global transition to a more sustainable economy.

The research reveals a significant shift in consumer behavior in Switzerland. An impressive 63% of Swiss consumers are open to purchasing refurbished devices, while 34% have already made such a purchase. Additionally, over half, 53%, intend to resell their current smartphones, reflecting a growing awareness of the benefits of extending the life cycle of electronic devices. These findings underscore a cultural shift toward sustainability, driven by both economic and environmental consciousness.

When it comes to why consumers choose refurbished products, affordability remains the top motivator. Many Europeans cite lower prices as the primary reason for their decision, alongside the desire to upgrade to newer models and the importance of recycling. This combination of practical and ethical considerations is shaping the future of the electronics market, with Switzerland leading the way.
