To coincide with World Earth Day, the European Recycling Platform (ERP) has encouraged households across Ireland to put an end to the accumulation of unused technology and consider more sustainable options such as repairing, reusing, or recycling outdated electrical goods. Research commissioned by ERP has found that a significant number of people are holding onto unwanted devices simply because they have yet to recycle them, while others keep old gadgets in the hope of repairing them at a later date. Forgotten electrical items are gathering dust in kitchens, attics, and sheds, representing a missed opportunity to reduce waste and recover valuable materials.
The findings also indicate a growing trend towards refurbished technology, particularly amongst younger generations. Nearly half of those surveyed have purchased pre-owned or refurbished electronic devices, with smartphones being the most commonly chosen items, followed by laptops and tablets. Factors such as product quality, affordability, and warranty are influencing these purchasing decisions. Despite a noticeable rise in the intention to repair old electronics, many are still postponing action, highlighting the need for greater awareness and accessibility when it comes to repair and recycling services.
In support of these aims, ERP Ireland has unveiled its schedule of Free Electrical Drop Off Events for 2025, making it easier for the public to responsibly part with unwanted electrical items and batteries. The initiative, which includes partnerships with retailers like Lidl Ireland, provides convenient collection points for communities in various counties. ERP is urging everyone to seize the opportunity this World Earth Day to clear out their forgotten gadgets, ensuring these items are either repaired, reused, or recycled, instead of being left to gather dust.
