HP expands refurbished equipment sales through partners

HP Inc. has taken a significant step towards its sustainability ambitions by allowing its authorised sales partners to offer refurbished personal computers and printers, compensating them on par with sales of new products. This move marks a notable expansion for HP Renew Solutions, a business division launched in late 2023 dedicated to distributing HP Certified Refurbished equipment. Previously, these secondhand devices were only available directly from HP, but now any partner approved to sell HP goods can include refurbished options in their portfolio.

The change comes as more organisations seek detailed sustainability metrics when procuring technology, with clients increasingly favouring products that align with their environmental commitments. HP’s refurbished equipment, typically devices returned at the end of lease agreements or during upgrades, are restored with new components and rigorously tested before resale. This approach not only extends the lifespan of IT assets but also assists businesses in meeting measurable sustainability objectives, such as reducing the carbon footprint of their technology estates. For example, refurbished EliteBook laptops have been shown to offer up to a 60 percent reduction in carbon emissions compared to their original versions.

HP’s global partner network is crucial to its commercial success, accounting for around 85 percent of its annual revenues, which reached $54 billion in the last financial year. Recognising the influence of this channel, HP has ensured that partners receive equal incentives for selling both new and certified refurbished products. This approach, company leaders say, enables sales teams to prioritise customer needs and promote circularity without financial compromise. Furthermore, HP has introduced training such as the Amplify Impact certification, equipping partners with the knowledge to leverage sustainability data as part of their sales strategies—an area that has already generated substantial revenue growth.

The availability of refurbished HP products varies by country, with select personal computers offered in France, Spain, the UK, and the US, and refurbished printers now available as part of managed services contracts in both the US and the European Union. HP’s commitment to sustainability is further underlined by its pledge that, by 2030, three-quarters of its products and packaging will be made using recycled, renewable, or reused materials by weight. By expanding access to refurbished technology, HP is not only supporting customers in lowering their environmental impact, but also reinforcing its own position as a leader in the transition to a circular IT economy.
