Virgin Media O2, in collaboration with the technology charity Jangala, is tackling data poverty by providing free WiFi to thousands of people in need. Through their partnership, they have distributed over 1,000 ‘Get Boxes’ to charities and local authorities across the UK, with a goal to roll out 5,000 by April 2025. These compact devices create instant, secure WiFi networks powered by free O2 mobile data, ensuring connectivity for those who need it most.
This initiative is part of Virgin Media O2’s sustainability strategy, the Better Connections Plan, which aims to connect one million digitally excluded individuals through free and affordable services. The O2 mobile data is supplied by the National Databank, a project by Virgin Media O2 and the Good Things Foundation, providing essential digital resources similar to a foodbank.
The impact of the Get Boxes is significant, offering fast and reliable WiFi to low-income families, the elderly, and those in temporary accommodation. Beneficiaries can access vital services such as job applications, medical appointments, and online education. Local authorities and charities, including Coventry City Council and AbilityNet, have been instrumental in distributing these devices, helping to bridge the digital divide and support vulnerable communities.
Nicola Green Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Officer at Virgin Media O2 highlighted the company’s commitment to bridging the digital divide through their partnership with Jangala, which provides essential online access to thousands of people. This initiative allows individuals to perform crucial tasks such as booking medical appointments, accessing digital skills training, and staying connected with loved ones. Virgin Media O2’s efforts to combat data poverty include offering free O2 data through the National Databank, redistributing devices via Community Calling, and providing affordable broadband and mobile plans for those on benefits.
Rich Thanki, Managing Director at Jangala emphasised the success of their collaboration, which leverages their cost-effective Get Box technology to support digital inclusion across the UK, showcasing the positive impact of tech-driven solutions.
