Recommerce joins GSMA for sustainability and innovation

Recommerce Group, a leading European specialist in the trade-in, refurbishment, and resale of high-tech devices, has officially joined the GSMA as an Industry Member. The GSMA is a global association representing the mobile technology sector. Since its inception in 2009, Recommerce has been instrumental in enhancing the longevity of mobile devices, particularly smartphones. The company has implemented buyback programs for telecom operators and manages the entire refurbishment process, which includes data wiping, testing, repairs, and resale. This approach not only mitigates electronic waste but also bolsters sustainability efforts within the telecommunications industry.

By becoming part of the GSMA, which includes telecom operators as well as manufacturers and software providers, Recommerce aims to further integrate sustainability into the mobile value chain. Over the past 15 years, the organisation has positioned itself as a key player in fostering a Circular Economy for various stakeholders. Its mission aligns closely with the GSMA’s sustainability initiatives, particularly in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. By prolonging the life of devices, Recommerce aids in promoting “Responsible Consumption and Production,” which reduces emissions and resource extraction while making technology more accessible.

The collaboration with GSMA will provide Recommerce with access to a vast network of mobile operators and industry leaders. This partnership will not only enhance the availability of high-quality refurbished devices but also create new avenues for innovation throughout the device lifecycle. Recommerce’s expertise in sophisticated trade-in and resale programs will be leveraged to maximise device value and extend product longevity. The GSMA is already at the forefront of addressing critical ESG challenges such as climate change and e-waste, and Recommerce’s involvement will strengthen efforts toward achieving net-zero emissions and fostering a sustainable future.

“We are thrilled to join the GSMA and collaborate with some of the most influential organizations in the mobile ecosystem. Sustainability through Circular Economy is at the heart of our business and being part of the GSMA allows us to work and exchange alongside like-minded partners to drive meaningful changes in the mobile industry” stated Augustin Becquet, CEO of Recommerce.

Likewise, Colin Bareham, General Manager of Membership at GSMA mentioned “We are delighted to welcome Recommerce as an industry member of the GSMA. Their commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with our mission to reduce the environmental impact of the mobile industry and promote circularity. We look forward to collaborating with Recommerce to advance our shared goals and create a more sustainable future for all”.
