Toshiba Tec has taken a significant step towards addressing the global plastic crisis through a new collaboration with CleanHub, a company dedicated to preventing plastic waste from entering oceans in pollution hotspots worldwide. This partnership reflects Toshiba’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and its broader Environmental Future Vision 2050, which aims to create a society that operates in harmony with the planet. Through this initiative, Toshiba is reinforcing its corporate responsibility by combining innovation with tangible action to tackle pressing environmental challenges.
CleanHub focuses on mitigating plastic pollution by supporting waste collection in coastal communities lacking proper infrastructure. The organisation not only removes mismanaged plastic waste but also creates dignified and fair-paying jobs for workers in these regions. Toshiba’s partnership with CleanHub is funding six waste collection hubs, with two located in Indonesia and four in India. These areas are among the most affected by plastic pollution, where waste is often burned, dumped, or left unmanaged, eventually polluting natural ecosystems. Toshiba has set an annual collection target of 116,279 kilograms of plastic waste, equivalent to over 3,000 hours of work for waste collectors. This initiative not only prevents harmful plastic waste from entering the environment but also supports some of the most marginalised communities by providing stable employment opportunities.
Transparency is a cornerstone of the Toshiba-CleanHub partnership. CleanHub employs advanced tracking technology to monitor every kilogram of waste collected, ensuring that the plastic is properly processed and reintegrated into the economy. This system, which provides real-time data on waste collection efforts, has been verified by TÜV SÜD, a respected industry leader in environmental auditing. As the first plastic credit system to receive such certification, CleanHub offers Toshiba the assurance that their contributions are both genuine and impactful. For Toshiba, aligning with a partner that shares its commitment to verifiability and sustainability was essential in ensuring the success of this initiative.
Toshiba Tec’s collaboration with CleanHub exemplifies how businesses can balance environmental sustainability with social impact. This initiative not only reduces plastic pollution but also offers meaningful support to vulnerable communities by creating safe and dignified jobs. Sarah Kochli, Head of Marketing at Toshiba Tec UK, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “By supporting CleanHub, Toshiba is not only helping to protect our oceans but also contributing to the well-being of collection teams on the ground.” Through its partnership with CleanHub, Toshiba is setting a new standard for corporate responsibility, demonstrating how innovation and sustainability can work together to tackle global challenges. This collaboration aligns seamlessly with Toshiba’s Environmental Future Vision 2050, reinforcing the company’s dedication to creating a more sustainable and inclusive future.
