Dutch social enterprises Fairphone and ChatLicense have entered a partnership aimed at fostering mindful mobile phone usage among young people. Through this collaboration, Fairphone will offer ChatLicense, a digital “driver’s licence” designed to guide children in using their first smartphone responsibly, to customers purchasing a new handset. Both org-anisations share a commitment to driving positive change within the electronics sector, championing ethical practices and striving for a more sustainable and conscientious digital landscape. The two companies will also jointly take part in the Dutch Pavilion at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Fairphone’s commitment to ethical manufacturing extends beyond environmentally friendly products; the company is equally invested in shaping a healthy digital future. Marjolein van Osch, Fairphone’s Head of eCommerce, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the importance of nurturing digital well-being alongside environmental stewardship. By integrating the award-winning, research-backed ChatLicense programme with every purchase, Fairphone aims to provide families with support and guidance, helping children navigate the complexities and opportunities presented by modern technology.
Martine de Leeuw, co-founder of ChatLicense, emphasised the need to equip both children and adults with the knowledge and tools to ensure safe and positive technology use. She noted that the collaboration with Fairphone marks the first time ChatLicense will be available free of charge to families across Europe, reflecting both companies’ dedication to improving digital habits for all age groups. This initiative is especially timely, as the mobile industry seeks to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by encouraging responsible consumer behaviour. The partnership represents a significant step towards ensuring that children enjoy a secure and constructive introduction to the digital world, while parents can choose sustainable devices that are built to last.
