Vodafone Germany achieves net zero emissions in operations

Vodafone Germany has reached net zero emissions from its own operations, meeting its target ahead of 2025. The company managed to cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by an impressive 93% since 2020, largely through making its network significantly more energy-efficient—saving up to 280 gigawatt-hours over the past four years. The remaining 7% of emissions, mainly from company vehicles running on petrol and diesel, have been offset by investing in certified climate protection projects, which include both nature-based initiatives such as reforestation and regenerative agriculture, as well as technological solutions like biochar production.

Vodafone Germany’s efforts form a key part of its parent company’s wider Climate Transition Plan, which sets out 17 measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all of Vodafone’s operating countries and business areas. As the company looks to the future, it will continue to electrify its vehicle fleet in Germany, aiming to further eliminate the last of its operational emissions.

Looking beyond its own operations, Vodafone Group has set an ambitious goal to achieve net zero emissions across its entire value chain (Scope 1, 2, and 3) by 2040. This includes addressing emissions outside the company’s direct control, such as those from suppliers and joint ventures, by partnering to make external processes more sustainable and less carbon-intensive.
