Donation of 200 recycled laptops in Swansea, UK

A total of 200 refurbished laptops have been distributed this month in Swansea thanks to the partnership between the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and Swansea Council. The devices, which were originally withdrawn from service by the DVLA and then cleaned and re-licenced, were handed out to young people supported by the council’s youth and education services, social services, and also to those connected to the council’s Domestic Abuse Hub. swanseabaynews.com

The scheme is part of the UK Government’s “IT Reuse for Good” charter and was launched by the DVLA in 2021. By giving used laptops a second life, the programme not only improves digital access for young people but also contributes to sustainability by reducing the number of devices discarded.

Council Leader Rob Stewart commented that this latest batch will make a “real and positive difference” to young people and families working towards training and employment. The DVLA’s Chief Executive, Tim Moss CBE, also praised the initiative, noting that not everyone has access to a laptop at home and that these donations help young people get online, gain skills and pursue their goals.
