Econocom unveils new online marketplace for refurbished IT equipment

Econocom has introduced a dedicated e-commerce platform, shop.econocomfactory.com, aimed at selling refurbished IT hardware to businesses, signalling a strategic shift towards more sustainable procurement practices. The launch on 8 December 2025 was timed to coincide with World Climate Day, underlining the company’s intention to frame technology purchases not just as commercial transactions but as conscious contributions to reducing carbon emissions. The initiative reflects a broader effort to encourage organisations to adopt the reuse of IT equipment as a standard part of their purchasing decisions.

The marketplace adapts a model familiar in the consumer sector to meet the needs of professional buyers by offering a multi-brand catalogue complemented by services such as extended warranties, after-sales support and customisation options. Operated by Econocom Factory, a subsidiary with refurbishment facilities in Montpellier, the platform supports regional economic activity while ensuring rigorous control over the refurbishment process. Growing acceptance of second-hand equipment in business settings is supported by research showing a positive perception among employees and a preference among procurement teams for online purchasing channels, laying fertile ground for this digital offering.

Beyond commercial benefits, Econocom emphasises the environmental advantages of extending the lifespan of IT assets. With manufacturing accounting for the bulk of a device’s carbon footprint, reusing and upgrading equipment can play a tangible role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The launch also aligns with regulatory trends such as the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which pushes companies to measure and minimise the environmental impact of their operations, making refurbished technology an increasingly strategic choice for IT and procurement leaders.
