Nokia to modernise KPN’s network with 800g ready core and transport upgrade

Nokia has been chosen by Dutch operator KPN to overhaul the country’s core digital infrastructure with an 800G‑capable IP and optical network. The nationwide upgrade, part of KPN’s FabriQ architecture, will serve as the backbone for all fixed and mobile services, delivering higher speeds, greater resilience and improved security for millions of users while cutting energy consumption.

The new setup uses Nokia’s FP5 routers and PSE‑6 optical systems, boosting total capacity from 48 Tbps to more than 216 Tbps and enabling customer services above 10 Gbps. It also brings stronger automation and reliability features, including Europe’s first large‑scale brownfield rollout of SRv6, which simplifies traffic management and supports increasingly cloud‑driven services. Nokia says these capabilities will give KPN a flexible, future‑proof network designed to handle long‑term digital growth.

FabriQ is built to connect any access type to any service across both KPN’s own cloud and public cloud environments. With built‑in encryption, intelligent failover and support for a wide range of wholesale, enterprise and core services, the upgrade positions KPN to maintain its leadership in the Dutch digital services market over the coming decade.
