OVHcloud launches advanced environmental impact tracker for cloud services

OVHcloud, a leading figure in the European cloud computing sector, has introduced its new Environmental Impact Tracker, an enhanced tool designed to provide clients with a comprehensive view of the carbon emissions linked to their cloud usage. Building on its reputation for innovation and sustainability over the past 25 years, OVHcloud has refined this tool as an upgrade to its previous carbon calculator, expanding its coverage to include a broader range of products. The tracker now offers detailed monitoring for Baremetal, Hosted Private Cloud, and Public Cloud Compute services, and will soon extend to Public Cloud Storage and Web Hosting, ensuring a meticulous approach to emissions measurement across its portfolio.

This latest development reflects OVHcloud’s commitment to transparency and methodological robustness. The Environmental Impact Tracker encompasses emissions data across scopes 1, 2, and 3, accounting for the entire lifecycle of cloud infrastructure—from manufacturing through to operation. It uses advanced calculations, considering both average national emission factors and those specific to OVHcloud’s energy suppliers, as well as the role of component refurbishment in server assembly. Independent research by digital responsibility specialists has recognised the tool for its accuracy and comprehensive nature, reinforcing its status as a market benchmark.

Looking ahead, OVHcloud plans to enrich the tracker further by incorporating additional environmental indicators such as water use, abiotic resource consumption, and land impact, moving towards a genuinely multi-criteria assessment. The tool is now accessible globally (excluding the United States) via the OVHcloud Manager and a dedicated API, with further features scheduled for release throughout the year. This initiative underscores OVHcloud’s ongoing efforts to lead by example in sustainable cloud computing, as evidenced by its high industry rankings for energy and water efficiency and its top performance in sustainability assessments.
