Play and Ericsson boost Poland’s 5G and digital infrastructure

Play and Ericsson have signed a new memorandum to expand one of Poland’s most advanced mobile networks, with a strong focus on energy efficiency, resilience and security. Nearly half of Play’s radio network, around 6,000 base stations, already uses Ericsson equipment, and the refreshed deal will extend coverage and capacity while accelerating the rollout of 5G Standalone (SA). Initial SA trials are underway in Białystok, targeting use cases for municipalities and enterprises, including smart city services and private campus networks.

The collaboration also doubles down on research and innovation. Joint work at Ericsson’s R&D hubs in Łódź and Kraków will pursue spectrum efficiency and energy‑saving features, reflecting both companies’ commitment to responsible digitalisation. Ericsson argues that 5G can help cut carbon emissions by improving productivity and operational efficiency across industries and public services, a vision Play shares as it scales a modern, power‑conscious network for millions of users.

Since partnering in 2018, the companies have improved nationwide service quality and reduced the network’s carbon footprint through energy‑efficient solutions, laying the groundwork for one of Poland’s leading 5G ecosystems. The new agreement aims to sustain that trajectory: more innovation, better performance and a clearer path to sustainable growth in Poland’s digital economy, with 5G as a central driver. CTO Michał Ziółkowski and Ericsson Poland head Martin Mellor said the strengthened alliance will help position the country as a regional leader in digitalisation.
