Telefónica is advancing towards its goal of becoming a zero-waste company by 2030 through the refurbishment and reconditioning of customer premise equipment (CPEs). To support this circular economy initiative, Telefónica developed the VICKY platform, which uses blockchain technology to enhance the traceability and lifecycle management of modems, routers, and TV set-top boxes.
Since its launch five years ago, the VICKY platform has enabled Telefónica to reuse over 19 million routers and set-top boxes, achieving an 88% collection rate in 2023 and moving closer to its 90% target by 2024. This platform not only extends the lifespan of equipment but also helps avoid indirect carbon emissions from manufacturing new devices. When refurbishment isn’t possible, the equipment is recycled to minimise waste and reuse valuable materials like gold and copper.
The VICKY platform also addresses the complexities of global supply chains by providing complete automation and traceability of the logistics process. This digitization helps suppliers achieve greater efficiency, optimises procurement, and reduces delays. Recognized for its innovation by Gartner and Forbes, VICKY supports a more sustainable, efficient, and faster supply chain, contributing to Telefónica’s net-zero emissions goal by 2040.
Fernando Valero, Global Director of Supply Chain and Procurement Transformation at Telefónica stated that “We firmly believe that much of the innovation we will see in the near future will focus on process transformation, where new technologies such as blockchain, big data and the internet of things will be key factors in contributing to the decarbonisation of operations while generating environmental benefits.”
