Telia Lietuva’s “Meldas” ZeroSite brings greener 5G to Palanga

Telia Lietuva, working with ALGO Poland, has deployed Lithuania’s first ZeroSite base station in Palanga’s Užkanavė district, showcasing how next‑gen connectivity can coexist with natural landscapes. The 15‑metre “Meldas” pole was assembled and commissioned on site in just two days, avoiding bulky concrete foundations and heavy fencing to minimise land disturbance. Designed to blend with its surroundings and be dismantled or relocated if needed, the site supports all three national operators, an infrastructure‑sharing approach that reduces duplicated hardware and embodied emissions, while improving 5G reliability for residents and the area’s seasonal influx of visitors.

By concentrating multiple operators’ equipment in a single, compact mast, the ZeroSite model advances circular economy principles in network build‑out: fewer structures, shared resources, and extendable functionality. “Meldas” can host three sector antennas and nine 5G panels, and is prepared for modular add‑ons such as environmental sensors, public Wi‑Fi, cameras, and even EV charging, extending the asset’s service life and utility without new construction. This flexibility supports repair, upgrade and reuse over replacement, cutting waste over time and easing visual and ecological impact in a historic seaside resort known for its unique microclimate and heritage.

Local leaders highlight the dual benefits of connectivity and conservation, with Palanga’s mayor citing reduced peak‑season congestion and better everyday access. Telia Lietuva plans similar installations in Monciškės and Vilnius (Kalnų Park), targeting event hotspots where shared, quickly deployable sites can displace temporary, resource‑intensive setups. As a blueprint for sustainable telecoms, “Meldas” demonstrates how right‑sized, relocatable infrastructure and active sharing can lower lifecycle footprints, support circular practices in tower deployment, and deliver resilient digital services with respect for place.
