Virgin Media O2 has introduced Europe’s first fully pre‑assembled mobile mast as part of its £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan. By shifting complex assembly work from the field to controlled factory environments, the operator aims to accelerate deployment while improving quality and efficiency.
Traditionally, installing a mobile site required engineers to connect and configure hundreds of components on location. With the new approach, antennas, radios and cabling are pre‑built, tested and validated before arriving on site, reducing installation time by up to 75 per cent. Fewer connections mean lower risk of faults and less time spent working at height.
Although primarily a network innovation, the model also carries sustainability benefits. Shorter site visits reduce transport emissions and minimise disruption, while improved precision helps prevent performance issues that can lead to repeat maintenance. More efficient infrastructure deployment supports resilient connectivity without unnecessary resource use, an important consideration as digital demand continues to grow.
