VMO2 earns top marks for sustainable sourcing

Virgin Media O2 has secured an ‘A’ score from CDP’s Supplier Engagement Assessment for 2024, recognising robust action to curb supply-chain emissions and embed climate accountability with vendors. The company is pushing for a 90% absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2040, aligning partners to science-based targets, setting tailored baselines and carbon-cut plans for high‑impact suppliers, and improving third‑party emissions data quality. Practical product changes are underway too, such as making the Hub 5 router casing from 100% recycled plastic, trimming around 2.5kg CO2e per unit, while supplier webinars share decarbonisation know‑how at scale.

Its broader ESG progress has also been acknowledged with an EcoVadis Bronze Medal, placing the operator in the top 35% of rated organisations globally. The assessment spans environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement, reflecting the breadth of Virgin Media O2’s Better Connections Plan. Against a 2020 baseline, the company reports a 56% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 19% reduction in Scope 3, signalling momentum on both operational efficiency and value‑chain impacts.

Chief Sustainability Officer Dana Haidan highlighted the challenge and importance of supply‑chain decarbonisation, noting progress in how the business buys, measures data, and conducts lifecycle assessments. With a net‑zero target for 2040 across the full value chain, Virgin Media O2’s recent ratings underscore a dual focus: shrinking carbon intensity while growing responsibly to keep communities connected across the UK.
