Vodafone and Telenor push global ESG standards

Vodafone and Telenor have intensified their efforts to promote stronger ESG standards across the global telecoms supply chain, accelerating the industry’s transition toward more sustainable and responsible practices.

The two operators are working through international alliances and shared frameworks to drive improvements in areas such as carbon reduction, labour rights, ethical sourcing and circular‑economy integration.

A key part of their strategy focuses on establishing consistent requirements for suppliers, ensuring that every stage of the telecoms value chain, from device manufacturing to network equipment, operates with measurable environmental and social accountability. This includes reducing Scope 3 emissions, expanding low‑carbon procurement, and pushing manufacturers to adopt repairable, longer‑lasting designs that support re‑use and refurbishment.

Both companies emphasise that sustainability is no longer optional but fundamental to future telecom infrastructure. As networks grow more complex and device consumption continues to rise, operators are recognising that the only viable growth model is one that prioritises resource efficiency, circularity and strong ESG governance.

Vodafone and Telenor’s collaborative approach sets a blueprint for the wider industry, laying the groundwork for a more transparent and sustainable digital ecosystem on a global scale.
