Milieu Centraal advocates for refurbishment

In a recent study conducted by Milieu Centraal, it was revealed that nearly 50% of individuals in the Netherlands express a willingness to purchase refurbished smartphones or laptops. Despite this interest, actual sales remain low, prompting the environmental organisation to initiate a campaign aimed at encouraging consumers to consider opting for these sustainable alternatives. The campaign seeks to bridge the gap between consumer interest and actual purchases by addressing common misconceptions about refurbished technology.

A significant barrier to the adoption of refurbished devices lies in the skepticism surrounding their quality and longevity. The survey highlighted that many people harbor doubts about the durability and software support of second-hand gadgets. Additionally, around 20% of respondents admitted uncertainty regarding the definition of “refurbished.” This lack of awareness contributes to hesitation in making a purchase, underscoring the need for clearer communication about the benefits of choosing refurbished electronics.

To assist consumers, Milieu Centraal has launched the website kiesrefurbished.nl, which serves as a comprehensive resource for information on refurbished products. The site offers practical tips for buying second-hand devices and details about the independent quality certification known as Keurmerk Refurbished. The campaign features the slogan “Time for something new? Choose refurbished”, encouraging individuals to rethink their purchasing habits in favor of more environmentally friendly options. This initiative is supported by various partners, including OVERHAUS, Wereldgasten, Techniek Nederland, Clever Strategy B.V. and Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat.
