Currys offers Fairphone’s award-winning modular phone

Renewd hits suspension, but eyes for revival

The iconic Fairphone 5 is now available on currys.co.uk, thanks to a partnership between Currys and Dutch social enterprise Fairphone. This collaboration aims to make the sustainable and ethical smartphone more accessible to UK consumers, emphasising repairability amid the ongoing e-waste crisis. The award-winning Fairphone 5, recognised for its climate action innovation, can now be purchased online at Currys.

Designed with sustainability and repairability in mind, the Fairphone 5 features a fully modular design with 10 replaceable modules. Users can easily replace damaged parts, such as cracked screens or cameras, by ordering affordable spare parts online. The device also comes with a unique five-year warranty and eight years of software support, ensuring long-term usability.

Currys is the first major British electrical retailer to stock Fairphone devices sim-free, supporting its ‘Long Live Your Tech’ mission to reduce e-waste. Launched in 2022, this initiative includes Europe’s largest tech repair centre, which handles repairs, refurbishments, and recycling of nearly 3 million devices annually. Currys’ expert technicians perform over 600,000 customer repairs each year, promoting device repair over disposal.

Currys’ Group CCO, Ed Connolly highlighted the importance of supporting the circular economy, by stating that “We love amazing technology, but we know that we have to be mindful of our consumption: in the UK, we produce the second highest amount of e-waste per capita in the world.

Likewise, Fairphone’s CCO, Rutger Sneep mentioned that “We’re excited to partner with Currys to bring our brand of sustainable tech to everyone in the UK. Our partnership is a testimony of two companies taking responsibility by bringing you the most sustainable products on the planet. Our award-winning Fairphone 5 is made for people who care about the planet and do not want to compromise on features and design. It is now very simple for everyone in the UK to contribute to a better world. Change is truly in your hands”.
