Deutsche Telekom marks 30 years with major sustainability progress

Deutsche Telekom is celebrating its 30th anniversary by highlighting achievements in environmental responsibility and social engagement. The company is on track to reach climate neutrality in its own operations by 2025, with emissions already reduced by 94 percent compared to 2017. Telekom has fully switched to renewable energy sources since 2021 and continues to invest in energy efficiency, large battery storage, and a growing fleet of electric vehicles. By 2040, it aims for net-zero emissions across its entire value chain, further supporting climate goals through greener networks and products.

Alongside its environmental efforts, Deutsche Telekom is committed to the circular economy. In 2024 alone, it collected over nine million used mobile phones and refurbished nearly half of all returned devices, helping to minimise electronic waste. The company also recycles network technology, replacing old copper cables with fibre optics and ensuring environmentally responsible processing. Additionally, Telekom has adopted plastic-free packaging for all new devices and reduced overall waste by 18 percent in the past year.

Social inclusion and digital equality are central to Telekom’s strategy. The company works to make technology accessible for everyone, offering discounted devices and tariffs for students, seniors, and refugees, and supporting digital literacy projects. Its “No Hate Speech” initiative promotes responsible behaviour online and democratic values, reaching millions with its message. Deutsche Telekom also provides crisis support in emergencies, contributes financially to relief efforts, and encourages staff to volunteer, demonstrating a strong commitment to social responsibility and good corporate governance.
