Electrolux achieves zero waste to landfill certification for Romanian factory

The Electrolux factory in Satu Mare has been awarded the Zero Waste to Landfill certification, confirming that 99.44% of the waste produced by the facility is either reused, recycled, composted, or converted into energy, significantly reducing landfill contributions.

Since 2018, the Zero Waste to Landfill initiative has been actively implemented at the Satu Mare factory, playing a crucial role in reducing waste from various sources, including plastics, cardboard, electronics, chemicals, hazardous materials, and household waste. Compared to the program’s inception, the factory has cut landfill waste by nearly 97% as of 2024.

According to Eurostat’s latest analysis, Romania had the lowest recycling rate in the EU in 2022, standing at just over 3%. Additionally, while the EU average for landfill waste was 30.2%, Romania’s landfill and disposal rate was a striking 93.8%.

The Zero Waste to Landfill certification was awarded by the independent body Intertek, following a systematic waste reduction program introduced in 2018. The measures implemented align with Electrolux Group’s sustainability targets outlined in the 2023 report, which aims for all company factories to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill certification by 2025.
