The GSMA has unveiled a new innovation fund aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises developing environmentally focused mobile solutions in low- and middle-income countries. The programme will provide grants of up to £200,000 to businesses using digital technologies to drive clean energy access, improve affordability and strengthen digital inclusion.
The fund is designed to accelerate commercially viable projects that contribute to the circular economy and reduce environmental impact. Eligible initiatives include renewable energy solutions, smart metering, device refurbishment models and responsible e-waste management systems. A particular focus will be placed on extending the lifespan of mobile devices through repair, reuse and structured take-back schemes.
By directing financial support towards scalable, practical ideas, the GSMA aims to demonstrate that sustainability and connectivity can progress together. Encouraging refurbishment marketplaces and leasing models not only reduces waste but also lowers the cost of access to technology for underserved communities, reinforcing the role of mobile networks in inclusive, low‑carbon development.
