Telefónica raises its sustainability ambitions

Telefónica has unveiled its Global Sustainability Plan 2026–2030, placing sustainability at the heart of its business strategy. The roadmap includes ambitious environmental targets, such as achieving net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040, reducing Scope 3 emissions by 56% by 2030, and reaching zero waste across its operations by the end of the decade. The plan also strengthens the company’s focus on energy efficiency, responsible digitalisation and circular economy initiatives.

A key pillar of the strategy is extending the lifespan of network equipment and electronic assets through reuse, refurbishment and improved resource management. By prioritising circular practices alongside infrastructure modernisation, Telefónica aims to reduce waste while lowering the environmental footprint of its telecommunications networks.

The company also intends to increase the use of renewable electricity, improve supply chain transparency and integrate sustainability criteria into purchasing and investment decisions. These measures are designed to reduce emissions beyond its own operations while encouraging suppliers to adopt more sustainable practices.

As telecom operators face increasing pressure to decarbonise, Telefónica’s strategy demonstrates how circular economy principles and digital innovation can work together. Combining refurbishment, energy efficiency and renewable energy with long-term climate targets highlights the growing role of the telecom sector in supporting Europe’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
