Recent research conducted by Telekom HU reveals that approximately 2.7 million unused mobile phones are stored in households across Hungary. Most of these devices are kept as backup options, while some are passed on to family or friends. However, only a small fraction, around 7%, of Hungarians choose to sell their unused phones, leaving the majority idle and unused.
For years, Magyar Telekom has been committed to collecting non-functional and unused mobile phones through its recycling programs. In 2023 alone, the company collected five tons of electronic waste, ensuring that valuable materials were reintegrated into the production cycle rather than going to waste. This initiative reflects the Telekom’s dedication to fostering a more sustainable approach to managing electronic devices and reducing environmental impact.
Since December 2023, Telekom HU has partnered with Recommerce Group to offer customers an online platform where they can sell high-quality, functional smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles. In 2024, refurbished devices accounted for 10% of the products sold on Telekom’s webshop. This effort helped prevent over 723,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions and saved 2.2 million kilograms of raw materials, showcasing the significant environmental benefits of extending the lifecycle of electronic devices.
