Vantage Towers Spain explores virtual power plants to green mobile infrastructure

Vantage Towers Spain has teamed up with energy optimisation specialist Gridle to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of its telecom sites. The collaboration will see artificial intelligence used to manage battery systems at selected radio base stations, laying the groundwork for a virtual power plant model across its infrastructure.

At the heart of the initiative is smarter battery management. By charging batteries when electricity is cheaper and cleaner, and discharging them during peak demand, sites can reduce emissions and ease pressure on the grid. The approach also allows stored energy capacity to be traded in energy markets, turning backup power systems into active contributors to both resilience and revenue generation.

For the telecoms sector, where uninterrupted connectivity is critical, the move highlights how sustainability and operational security increasingly go hand in hand. By transforming battery assets into flexible energy resources, Vantage Towers is demonstrating how network infrastructure can support the energy transition while reinforcing service continuity during outages and extreme weather events.
