Virgin Media O2 has renewed its partnership with Good Things Foundation to continue providing free mobile connectivity through the National Databank. Since the programme launched in 2021, more than 550,000 people have received free O2 mobile data, calls and texts through community organisations, libraries and O2 retail stores.
Although the initiative is primarily focused on digital inclusion rather than refurbishment, it demonstrates another dimension of responsible technology management: ensuring existing connectivity infrastructure and devices deliver value to communities for as long as possible. The programme has also expanded beyond its original partners, with other UK operators contributing SIMs and data.
For the wider technology industry, initiatives such as the National Databank show that sustainability can extend beyond environmental targets. Maximising the usefulness of existing technology and connectivity while addressing digital exclusion supports a broader vision of responsible consumption, where technology continues to create social value rather than becoming disposable.
