Amazon has significantly expanded its European reverse logistics program with the launch of re:Cycle Reverse Logistics facilities in Dublin. These facilities test and repair equipment from AWS data centers, extending the life of hardware and electronics for reuse. This initiative supports Amazon’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon by reducing the need for new components, thus saving raw materials and energy. Additionally, any waste generated is sent for high-end recycling, ensuring zero waste goes to landfill.

The re:Cycle Reverse Logistics facilities employ advanced robotics and bespoke machines to handle up to two tons of equipment, enabling the reuse of components and recovery of precious metals like gold and silver. This process not only extends the life of hardware such as processor chips, RAM, and network cards but also supports AWS’s data center operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The facilities have created over 850 jobs in Ireland, contributing to the local economy and supporting the country’s carbon reduction goals.

AWS integrates the circular economy into its operations by designing reusable rack systems, maintaining efficient equipment, and recovering value from decommissioned hardware. Specialized vendors like re:Cycle Reverse Logistics play a crucial role in this process by consolidating, testing, and recirculating functional equipment. In 2023, AWS’s reverse logistics program diverted 14.6 million hardware components from landfills, highlighting the importance of these facilities in achieving sustainability objectives.
