The demand for refurbished smartphones is on the rise in Italy, with 60% of Italians expressing interest in these devices. This trend reflects a broader movement towards high-tech recycling and a preference for safe, second-hand goods. According to a survey commissioned by CertiDeal, a company specialising in refurbished electronics, 92% of respondents are aware of what a refurbished smartphone is and its benefits. The survey, conducted by Ipsos, included a thousand participants aged 18 to 65, representing the Italian adult population.
The primary motivation for purchasing refurbished smartphones is cost savings, with 50% of respondents citing this as their main reason. Refurbished high-quality smartphones can be 30% to 60% cheaper than new ones. Additionally, 14% of respondents are attracted to the possibility of owning high-end models, which might be financially out of reach if bought new. For instance, the latest Apple iPhone model can cost as much as 1,989 euros, comparable to the price of a laptop.
Environmental considerations also play a significant role in the decision to buy refurbished smartphones. Up to 44% of respondents believe that choosing refurbished devices contributes to sustainable development by reusing batteries and reducing electronic waste. The survey also revealed high satisfaction rates among those who have purchased refurbished smartphones, with 83% of buyers reporting they were very satisfied and intending to make similar purchases in the future.
