KPN’s environmental goals endorsed by STBi

Virgin Media O2 cuts carbon emissions by 23%

KPN is dedicated to creating a #BetterInternet that is greener, more social, and safer. To achieve this, KPN has set specific sustainability and climate goals, aiming to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions both in the short and long term. These efforts align with global initiatives to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Recently, KPN’s climate objectives were re-evaluated and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The SBTi has endorsed KPN’s ambitious emission reduction targets up to 2040. By 2030, KPN plans to cut its absolute scope 1 emissions by 84% and its absolute scope 3 emissions by 75.6% by 2033, compared to 2015 levels. Additionally, KPN is committed to purchasing 100% renewable energy annually (scope 2) and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, including the impact of its suppliers and customers (scope 3).

The group’s CEO, Joost Farwerck, stated that “The fight against climate change is one of the most urgent societal issues and of great importance to our customers and future generations. That is why we at KPN work closely with our suppliers and customers to achieve our ambitious climate goals. Emission reduction is and remains a top priority, for example, we make the transition to sustainable and local energy sources with the right power at the right time by coordinating the supply and demand of renewable energy. We have also been committed to significant energy savings for years, despite the strong growth in data traffic.”

For years, KPN has been working towards a #BetterInternet that is not only faster and more stable but also safer, more social, and environmentally friendly. As a green provider, KPN has been at the forefront of sustainability efforts, joining the SBTi in 2017 to contribute to CO₂ reduction. The company has made significant progress with long-term agreements to purchase renewable energy from wind and solar sources, reinforcing its commitment to reducing its climate impact.
